Responsibilities: Legal Counsel

As a Legal Counsel at Shakepay, you will ensure that our company complies with all relevant laws and regulations. Internally, you will provide guidance and support to various teams regarding legal inquiries and issues. Externally, you will protect the interests of Shakepay and its customers, collaborating with external vendors and regulators to negotiate and establish favorable legal arrangements.

You will:

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to proactively identify and address potential legal concerns and risks.
  • Provide strategic legal guidance across multiple areas of the business, including commercial, securities, consumer protection, IP, employment, privacy, marketing, and regulatory.
  • Contribute to the development and launch of innovative products and services by offering legal insights and support.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance by staying updated on changes in financial services laws and regulations.
  • Prepare, review, and negotiate commercial contracts while providing legal advice on associated risks.
  • Collaborate with external law firms to ensure comprehensive legal support and expertise when necessary.
  • Efficiently manage dispute resolutions, law enforcement inquiries, and other legal proceedings.
  • Draft terms and conditions, policies, and disclosures to ensure legal compliance and transparency.
  • Develop and implement streamlined processes to enhance the efficiency of legal workflows.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in law and/or Juris Doctorate with provincial bar membership.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel in Canada.
  • Proficient in legal terminology and operations.
  • Solid understanding of corporate law and commercial law.
  • Pragmatic, solution-driven mindset with critical thinking and multitasking abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent contract negotiation and drafting skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with a proactive approach.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the financial and/or technology industry.
  • Interest in cryptocurrency and new technologies.
  • Crisis management experience.
  • Fluency in French, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
