Vice President of AI Data Center Design
Job Overview:
The Vice President of AI Data Center Design will be responsible for leading CleanSpark's end-to-end data center design function, crafting the strategy, standards, and execution model necessary for effectively expanding AI and high-performance computing infrastructure across the organization. This role will involve establishing and operationalizing the design engineering vision of CleanSpark and ensuring that all infrastructure designs are scalable, cost-effective, standardized, and aligned with long-term business goals.
The VP of AI Data Center Design will also manage multi-disciplinary design engineering teams and steer the development of integrated design systems encompassing electrical, cooling, controls, and network infrastructure. It will be essential to enforce the consistent application of Basis of Design (BoD) frameworks, modular design principles, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) standards to facilitate the swift and repeatable deployment of infrastructure at scale.
A key aspect of this position will involve collaborating closely with Product, Power, Construction, Operations, and Finance teams to harmonize design strategy with capital planning, operational performance, and growth initiatives, all contributing significantly to CleanSpark's ongoing expansion through ensuring design excellence, enhanced deployment speed, and enduring infrastructure reliability.
Job Duties:
Design Strategy & Organization Management
- Outline and drive the strategic vision for design engineering within CleanSpark's data center infrastructure portfolio.
- Innovate and evolve design standards, Basis of Design (BoD) approaches, and engineering frameworks to enable scalable growth.
- Establish and direct a high-performance, interdisciplinary design engineering organization, overseeing recruitment, development, and succession planning.
Standardization & Infrastructural Scalability
- Promote the adoption of modular design principles and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) throughout all infrastructure programs.
- Guarantee the uniform application of standardized design systems for enabling repetitive, cost-efficient deployment.
- Strike an equilibrium between innovation and standardization to optimize performance, speed, and cost.
Interdisciplinary Systems Integration
- Supervise the integration of electrical, cooling, controls, and network systems to ensure a cohesive and optimized infrastructure performance.
- Ensure that design solutions match operational requirements, reliability standards, and long-term scalability.
Design Execution Oversight
- Provide executive supervision for design execution across all schedules, regions, and projects.
- Make sure delivery of high-quality, aligned, and construction-ready design packages in line with timelines and business priorities.
- Setup governance, procedures, and metrics to enhance responsibility and performance across the design function.
Cross-Functional Coordination & Business Integration
- Collaborate with Product, Construction, Operations, Power, and Finance teams to align design strategy with capital planning, project executions, and operational performance.
- Guarantee a seamless transition from design to construction and operations to mitigate risks and boost efficiency.
Innovation & Continuous Enhancement
- Identify and implement methods to boost design efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance infrastructure performance.
- Propel the adoption of new technologies, tools, and methodologies to cater to CleanSpark's evolving infrastructure needs.
Risk Compliance & Management
- Ensure all sequences comply with pertinent codes, regulations, and internal standards.
- Institute and uphold design governance procedures to oversee risks, ensure quality, and be ready for audits.
Executive Leadership & Stakeholder Participation
- Act as a chief advisor to executive leadership concerning infrastructure design strategy and investment determinations.
- Convey design strategy, performance assessments, and risks to senior stakeholders and executive leadership.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support strategic endeavors related to expansion, acquisitions, and new site development.
- Head special projects and other duties as delegated.
This role mandates executive presence, strategic acumen, and proficiency in leading complex, high-impact initiatives in a swiftly evolving, growth-centric setting.
Qualifications:
- Will require up to 50% travel.
- Candidates must be located within a one-hour radius of a major U.S. airport to meet travel obligations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related technical field (master’s degree is preferable).
- Experience of 12–15+ years exhibiting progression in engineering design, with substantial leadership involvement in data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, or industrial settings.
- A demonstrated record in leading extensive, interdisciplinary design engineering teams.
- Profound proficiency in MEP systems and integrated infrastructure design.
- Adroitness in steering design standardization, modular infrastructure, and scalable deployment models.
- Proven capability to sway cross-functional stakeholders and synchronize technical strategies with business aims.
- Robust leadership, organizational, and decision-making competencies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in AI, high-performance computing (HPC), or hyperscale data center environments.
- Familiarity with sophisticated cooling technologies and high-density compute infrastructure.
- Possession of a Professional Engineering (PE) license or an equivalent certification.
- Previous involvement in supporting global or multi-region infrastructure programs.
