Chief Legal Officer (CLO) for background check startup
About the position
EPASS is looking for a Chief Legal Officer (CLO) who will lead the company’s legal and compliance functions and staff, oversee and coordinate legal matters, ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and collaborate with outside counsel as needed. The CLO will report to the CEO and serve as a member of the Executive team.
Currently, our project is at the pre-seed stage, requiring investment for further development. The team is a startup's most important resource, without a strong staff, it's impossible to launch a successful product or find an investor. As a result, we are now building a team that will be able to start working in 3 months, during which we plan to secure investment.
What we will trust you with is:
- Developing and leading a corporate legal strategy to promote and protect company matters
- Developing and leading internal audit and corporate compliance programs
- Overseeing the delivery of legal services and resources to accomplish corporate goals, strategies and priorities
- Maintaining proper corporate interactions with the relevant local, state and federal governmental bodies, legislatures and the community at large
- Advising the CEO and other senior corporate officers on a variety of issues
- Participating in the formulation of general management policies as a member of the executive management team
Your profile:
- At least 5 years' related experience as in-house counsel or in a large firm with a professional background in human resources.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. background check services regulations, with a working knowledge of corporate, data and consumer protection laws
- Experience effectively managing budgets and legal expenses.
- Strength in problem solving and applying legal insights to analyze issues and recommend viable options.
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to represent the company credibly internally and externally.
- Ability to stay abreast of legal developments and counsel accordingly.
- Detail orientation, diplomacy, organization, self motivation, dependability, and competent judgement
- A drive to understand business, industry, and applicable regulatory agencies.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Even-tempered and able to balance multiple tasks according to changing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Fluent in English (verbal and written)
