We are looking for a Database Engineer with substantial experience in SQL Server and cloud environments (specifically AWS) to contribute to enhancing production database systems at a technology-driven company. This company operates critical production systems in a cloud and hybrid infrastructure setting and is in the process of upgrading its platform and enhancing automation. As they expand their infrastructure team to focus on ensuring database reliability, scalability, and operational excellence, they require expert database engineering support.
In this role, you will collaborate with a dynamic, results-driven team responsible for maintaining the stability, performance, and reliability of various database platforms in both production and non-production environments. You will be instrumental in day-to-day operations, incident management, and continuous enhancement initiatives.
The ideal candidate for this role must be proactive, detail-oriented, and adept at working in high-stakes production environments. You should have the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively, address urgent issues promptly, and take full ownership of database-related challenges, from identification to resolution. Key Responsibilities:
- Administer and maintain production and non-production database environments across cloud and hybrid infrastructure.
- Monitor database health, performance, and availability, responding promptly to alerts and incidents.
- Execute routine maintenance tasks, including backups, restores, patching, and index optimization.
- Troubleshoot database performance issues related to queries, indexing, locking, and resource utilization.
- Support database provisioning, configuration, and upgrade tasks.
- Manage database access, roles, and permissions following security best practices.
- Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to facilitate deployments and incident resolution.
- Utilize Infrastructure as Code (specifically Terraform) for provisioning and configuration purposes.
- Support CI/CD workflows for database operations using tools like GitLab.
- Document processes, incidents, and configurations to uphold a reliable knowledge base.
- Contribute to automation initiatives geared towards reducing manual work and enhancing consistency across environments.
Mandatory Skills:
- 3–6 years of experience in database administration or database engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server in production settings.
- Sound understanding of backup and recovery strategies, including validation and testing.
- Experience troubleshooting database performance issues such as query tuning, indexing, and execution plans.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, specifically services like RDS.
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Familiarity with supporting or integrating with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred).
- Basic scripting skills using PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Understanding of high availability, disaster recovery, and database security best practices.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with other databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MariaDB.
- Exposure to MongoDB or Snowflake.
- Background in working with hybrid cloud environments.
- Familiarity with automation and infrastructure standardization practices.
- Experience in high-availability or regulated environments.
- Interest in transitioning towards platform engineering or cloud infrastructure roles.
