Editorial Assistant
What we are looking for:
This position directly supports our Editor-in-Chief The position is available full-time, and the candidate must be based in or near by California. The right candidate will be able to balance various workloads each week, work independently at times, and be reliable with good attention to detail. The position requires good organization skills and ideally, a love of communications, as a key part of the role will be supporting the team with publications and PR. The role will start off working remotely with occasional face to face meetings.
You will be helping with a range of tasks including:
Assisting the news editor in managing selected news stories from miscellaneous sources of news.
● The news editor shall forward information to you for each story, via Slack or email, including relevant articles or press releases and text of special requests to scientists or other sources. You will then have to send this information to the PR person associated with the press release or article. This will require the Editorial Assistant to research information on the companies, organization, or individual, and send details to editors.
● Contact PR persons (or other persons, to be provided) for each item selected from the News Stories List or press release. Examples of information to be requested by EA: i. “Please put us in touch with [name(s) of expert cited in [press release] or [corresponding author of a paper, for example) or other information. Please send information to [name of EA].” ii. "Please provide graphics, as described, with the largest available file size and multiple different image choices, preferably in PNG filed format. And please provide permission for Mindplex to publish [document or image]. iii. “Please provide a bio and other relevant information for our podcast production.”
● Maintain subscriptions to magazines and other news sources
● Monitor subscriptions requiring renewals. (See above subscription instructions.)
● Watch for relevant new publications and alert the team ● Coordinate and schedule participants in interviews or podcasts.
● Maintain and update a full list of contacts, associated organizations and information, and other data as required.
● Posting news story
● Post text of original or edited press release
● Find images and edit as required by news editor
● Upload images with strict attention to details during submission.
● Proofread ● Save and send URL to news editor
● Research other topics, published material, and new announcements, assigned by news editor as needed
